People tend to equate Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day. Same displays. A close friend of mine was part of a motorcycle group that would go to the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA and plant flags at all the graves. He always made sure my Dad's grave had a flag. Sadly, he passed 18 months ago and is now buried in that same cemetery.

We were assigned to the same hotel room during our overnight stay. He was a very fine young man. FFA - wanted to be a farmer like his grandpa. Another person I will be thinking about is the new guy who came on our team 2 weeks before I went home. He was killed by a sniper after only 30 days into his 12 month tour. 19 years old. Salute!

This photo brought me to tears -- a young widow and her baby some years ago as close to her fallen Marine Corps husband as possible.
A reminder that the pain and loss associated with Memorial Day radiates far and wide from the deceased servicemen and servicewomen to parents, siblings, spouses, children, friends, etc.

Here’s a link to a book written about Ed Schultz, classmate and fellow who
was drafted the same day as me. The author, Lynne Ludwick, was Ed’s niece, but grew up more like brother and sister as she was only 3 years younger. Lynne and I exchanged a few emails while she was writing her book. I was able to fill in a few blanks regarding the induction process. I won’t give away the ending, except to say Lynne traveled to Vietnam and visited the location where Ed was killed and remarkably had an encounter with a former VC soldier who was involved. And remember, tomorrow is a National Moment of Remembrance, a yearly event on Memorial Day, where Americans are encouraged to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. local time to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.
