Info on collapsible trunk base would be very helpful too.
Thanks

dang, i was personally hoping the height would increase to match the GLE and Range Rover Sport. the decrease in height plus the extended length makes it look even shorter in proportions and wagon-like, like thte ix3

Quite a few sources, both inside and out of BMW, has said it is gone and what we are seeing on the spy shots is just misleading camo. Hopefully they are all wrong but it doesn't seem likely at this point.

Why the removal of the split tailgate? Money? That’s a very nice feature. But I get it. Keeping it for the 7 series SUV or what?

Missing split tailgate will be massive. It has been the X5's signature since they first worked on the first gen with Range Rover...
I liked it so much I was cross shopping with Rivian R1s and Range Rover but both are less reliable... |

Split tailgate is so much convenient for loading or unloading, I hope they will keep it in G65.

If split tailgate goes, I can’t buy another X5, it’s such a great feature, mainly easy to load, but protects the rear bumper too, and good sit on it for impromptu picnic!
I will have to get a RR and a Kia ! I can use the Kia when RR in for repair😃 |

Like Turtleboy I am taking a wait and see attitude. I am on my 5th BMW in 10 years. I liked the styling of the vehicles I have purchased (328, 535, 540, X5, X5), the current X5 probably being the last that has the classic BMW conservative classic look. But the kicker has always been the drive. I have a unique household in that I have a X5 ordered for comfort (multi contours, no vent or massage, 2 axle air, DAPP and 20 inch wheels) and my wife has a similarly equipped 2025 GLE 450. So I am driving the competition. Her car has more room, better HVAC and some hard buttons. It is a nice vehicle but the ride is better on mine (she has air suspension and small wheels too), it handles better and the powertrain is in another class for responsiveness (although MB does ASS so much better). The BMW is about 250-300lbs lighter. The G05 turning circle is too large and it's steering is slow which makes it harder to maneuver in small spaces than the GLE 450.
I see the new one, if these numbers are correct, will be longer (creating possibly worse maneuverability unless rear steering is std or they make changes to address the turning circle) and it will be heavier, matching the upcoming LCI 2 on the GLE. It is getting more horsepower but no more torque (but the upgraded hybrid motor may make up for that). The times of the X5 being the drivers' choice may or may not be over. Certainly the specs (other than the possibility of increasing rear legroom) are not encouraging to us that thought the current X5 is the right size for a midsize SAV/SUV. But I am still going to be cautious in writing them off. The overall shape, despite the NK styling elements, looks similar. BMW appears to still have great suspension engineers (see the X3, IX and the IX3) and I would never write off the engineers for the B58/ZF combo. It has been the standard bearer for too long to assume the X5 will not perform well, be smooth and reasonably frugal. Yes, I am not eager to have even more screens and less buttons. But my gut says the interface will be user friendly and the voice control will get even better. Since my wife will be retiring soon, I am going to scale back to one upscale expensive (to me) vehicle and one more mundane ride. Right now, since I really like the inline 6 from both BMW and MB it is likely to be an X5 40 or a GLE 450 (who I understand will also be updating the powertrain in 2027). But MB is also going no buttons and I do not see their screen heavy interface will being more user friendly than BMW. They are allegedly updating their air suspension. I will give them a fair shot to impress me but I am still cautiously optimistic that BMW knows that the X5 is their make or break vehicle and they have to get the drive and user interface right. I suspect the price increase will require it. I am very, very eager to see what August of 2026 holds. |

The X5 's MH system is going from 12hp to 17hp but it looks like the torque is staying the same.

Both from what I have read. The updated BMW drivetrains are described on this forum. I have read recent articles on major auto websites about prototype drives of the '27 GLE. It is not a new model like the X5 (more an LCI 2) but comments suggest it will have a new plug in with the inline 6 instead of the 4 and updates to the mild hybrid inline 6 (GLE 450, no e)
As someone who has both mild hybrid inline 6s in my garage, I can say they are both excellent engines. Very smooth and strong with pleasant sound and decent fuel economy, given the vehicle weight. The main area of superiority to me is the integration between the engine and the transmission. BMW seems prescient in how they coordinate and tune the two. It almost always seems to be in the right gear. It downshifts more readily when asked to and the shifts are much smoother overall. The MB 9 speed is better than the truly horrible (and unsafe) one on my wife's 2020 GLE 350. But unless you are accelerating aggressively it is not smooth and the GLE 450 seems hesitant. Not horrible, mind you. But BMW is simple better tuned. One thing in MB's favor (maybe less relevant today) is the start-stop is invisible. Even with the improvements in the LCI X5 I still disable the start-stop on every trip. While not terrible it is still noticeable and annoying to me (and the AC drops off). While I do the same thing on the GLE out of habit (and there is a button on the dash to disable it) it is really unnecessary. It is almost invisible and there is less reduction in AC in off mode. MB probably should fire their transmission team and transfer the team that engineered the start-stop to the transmission division. |

Had a GLE53 and I can confirm that it was one of the smoothest (if not the smoothest) auto start stop I've experienced. The 9 speed was good but had a tendency to "hunt" for the proper gear during everyday driving. It wasn't horrible but sometimes seems to get 4th and 5th confused.
Currently driving a Q8 and super excited for the G65. Quote:
