SHARMAATL wroteSame. Looks like Range Rover Sport or Cayenne can take my money instead. From a long term fan, BMW has been nothing but disappointment lately.Looks like I'll be getting a Range Rover. This thing is unbelievably hideous.
Folks actually are on here willing to drop $90k+ on a car while saying "I don't mind it" as the nicest compliment. Wild.

The rodent teeth like grille didn’t look good back in the 1970s, but it certainly doesn’t work 50 years later on much bigger vehicles!
Unfortunately, I think that some manufacturers (BMW included) employ designers who are not representative of their target customer.
If this is the final version, I could live with the side and rear, but the front is always the most important view and I would really struggle with this look. I am also concerned about the practicality of the panoramic iDrive, with information being further away from the driver than at present.
I’ll reserve final judgement until I drive one but, like many others, I am fearful that the current X5 may be the last one that appeals to me. BMWs new styling direction is polarising and I’m not getting that “I want one” feeling!

BimmerXdrive wrote“downfall” as sales continue to grow.🤢🤢 It’s been a good run, gents. For what it’s worth, personally that’s not a front-end design I could ever see myself behind the wheel of. Taking a grille design from 1970s isn’t working here. BMW design downfall should be studied, possibly a Netflix documentary aswell.
I’ll enjoy my G05 example a bit longer, then venture into different brands or models.

buckybadger wroteBMW has been doing this forever. It wasn’t as bad as Audi, but same generations are quite similar styling across the lineup.Looks like an iX3 but bigger.
All new BMWs are starting to look the same, just like Teslas.

Hoped it would be slightly more differentiated at the front compared to the iX3. Not a fan of the new taillights of NK, exp these, the ones of the current/outgoing gen are probably te best in the market.
As someone who has never used it, what's the practical benefit of the split tailgate? Just curious
I get being able to sit and whatever, but that's not too different than a normal tailgate, plus you have a high loading sill and you have to wait even more for it to fold down.

A few big positives of the split tailgate:
1) You can use it as a seat. Also really useful as a baby changing area (just don’t put the baby right by the edge)
2) protects the rear bumper area when loading/unloading large/heavy things (think Home Depot/Costco runs
3) As the split tailgate makes the upper tailgate shorter, it means that you need less room behind/above the car to open the tailgate. Those of you with small garages will appreciate this the most
4) being able to just open the upper tailgate means that small/loose objects can’t roll put of the trunk unless you also lower the lower tailgate
Personally, I love the split tailgate and can’t find a single thing negative to say about it from an end user perspective.
There are so many times that I would have loved to have had the split tailgate on my X3M.
Judging from these pictures and with BMW’s aggressive “cost-cutting” across the board, I’m not surprised that they ditched the split tailgate. It saves manufacturing cost by moving to the single traditional tailgate. But as with many of BMw’s recent moves, they are taking away truly useful features in an effort to boost their profit margin.

airkat32 wroteAnd this, of course, is the issue. Many of those who like the look couldn’t afford one anyway, so aren’t the target audience. Meanwhile, most of us who can afford an X5, who surely BMW should be targeting, don’t like the look of it. It’s a strange strategy to alienate those who you rely on. It’s not in the same league of stupidity as the Jaguar rebrand, but…..BEAUTIFUL!!! Too bad I wont be able to afford it. Myabe in two years after Im done with my U11 I will get into an X3. Looks pretty nice overall. Too bad the split tailgate is gone. Also, I don't think it is going to look right without those massive wheels...looks like 22 inch wheels in the picture.

You can not claim sales increases are due to the awful design language without a control group during the same time. It's more about the macro economy, other cars putting out horrible designs, higher income people making more money and more to spend on cars like BMWs, etc.

They look different to me, compare 2 vs. 3 vs. 5 vs. X5 etc in prior generations, but now all are starting to look the same.

snareman wroteWe’re fortunate that the price difference is negligible to us. Our past five daily drivers have all been Bimmers because we prefer the under the radar yet sporty combo. My wife said she’d feel too “flashy” rolling into work with a Cayenne or RR, whereas her black M50i is perfect. My current X5 M60 was 98k. I built a RR Sport and to get the same 523 HP I'm at $127k, which is also Cayenne price range. We'll also have to see what the new X5's are going to cost
However when she saw these new pics her reaction was “yuck, that’s disgusting and I’d be embarrassed to drive to work in that! I’d rather deal with the RR and “Porsche” comments than drive a terrible looking car.”
Really curious what BMW is thinking. New design language doesn’t appeal to a car enthusiast (me) yet also doesn’t appeal to my wife who doesn’t really care & just wants something that looks “sporty and not ugly”.
