Let's be real, most people are getting carbon fiber for the look. Interior isn't really lighter with CF. Mirrors weigh nothing whether they're CF or plastic. A roof is a little lighter, and a chassis brace in CF is a little lighter... But reality is we get parts in CF in 99% of the time for the looks.

This doesn't look like carbon fiber. It looks like fake carbon fiber. Maybe BMW can convince people that it's better, maybe not. I think they'd be foolish to make it the only.option and not offer real CF as well.

Personally, I don't like how it looks. I'd want it to be painted over. After that I don't really care what it looks like if it's painted black.

They’ve only just begun testing it. They potentially haven’t used it in F1… yet.

Without proof otherwise, we can easily attribute this to cost cutting.

This board has a massive left wing bias. Those other boards likely have a right wing bias. It's fairly common for the the counter voices on a board to do what they can to distinguish themselves from the majority mindset.

The Corvette forum is a very right wing place, and it has several members that post stuff with no purpose other than to show that they're different. It's weird when anyone does it.

Honestly, that's fair. We've seen them phase out buttons and higher end materials to cost cutting. We've even seen them call plastic seats stuff like "veganza" to try to sell it as something other than cost cutting.

Have you actually tried out the Veganza seats?

To be honest even the name was a huge red flag for me. Every single car I've owned has had real leather seats. But when I got to actually do a side by side compare of Veganza and Merino for my G60 I found no reason to pay extra. It feels just as good if not better. If someone had told me it was real leather I would have 100% believed them. And it will probably last longer since it's synthetic.

It still lowkey irks me that it's "vegan", but that's the kind of stupid hang-up I laugh at when it's other people doing it. I don't let my political beliefs tell me what is or what isn't a good product. Technology marches on.

Like everything else new, I’m sure I’ll get used to it in time.

I’m a bit over carbon fiber anyway, I had it on my 2001 Acura CL in 2000! so it’s been around for a long time and it’s time for something new.

This looks more like a weird material that designers use to make weird clothing that no one wears. I’d rather have plastic instead

Yes because racecars are famously never replacing parts on the exterior of the car.

I have. It's fine, it's a nice synthetic leather. But sometimes you want real stuff.

Veganza, and all the other fake leathers are cheaper, and BMW prices them like that. I'm ok with that. What I'm not ok with is trying to sell me that your cheaper material is better when it's really just a cost savings for you.

I.agine how different this would have gone over if the sales pitch was "flax fiber allows us to reduce the cost by 30% meaning we can use more of this material that has most of the same benefits of carbon fiber, meaning we can reduce weight in the vehicle by x% at the same price point while reducing carbon emissions". People would be overjoyed that this new cheaper CF replacement was coming to make the cars lighter.

60F?! That's like, layer up weather here. My neighbors would all have down parkas on for that.

I often wonder who are the people at BMW making these decisions - if they're that environment committed, maybe they shouldn't be working at a global car company?

I also lump in those designers who came up with the utter excrement cluster of idrive7 and up and dash design of the newer cars that looks like someone threw in 2 screens and said 'k'

Couldn't get hired at Tesla, eh? Or did they get fired from there after the Cyber truck?

Maybe it's hard to understand.

The same teams who ran the f82 m4 gt4, and now run the g82 m4 gt4, say the new cf is crap compared to the old one.

Is this easy enough to get or still no luck?
