Dealer near me had a few Quadrifoglios so I test drove one and albeit it was a short test drive it felt very meh. Engine/exhaust sounded great, interior felt very base 3-series like, did not like the looks, rear seat has no fold down option and brakes in slow speed traffic will take a lot of getting used to. Also, it's handling/performance is predicated on it having sticky tires so wonder what happens with standard MPSS.

Motortrend hasn't been credible in a long, long time.

Aside from driving dynamics this car has nothing going for it. Poor interior quality, poor build quality, subpar infotainment, poor reliability, terrible residuals. They picked the grandpa looking Caddy CTS a few years ago which was plagued with the same problems and it has been a gigantic flop on the market. It sits on dealer lots longer than all but 4-5 cars in the entire market irrespective of price.

Unless you don't care about anything outside of driving dynamics you'd have to be an idiot to get this car. The new A4/S4 would've been a more appropriate choice for this award.

Not just that specific car,but what about the decade-long dominance of the E46/90/92 3 series, which was considered the benchmark of sport sedans/coupes? Not a single win. Seems fishy to me but this is Motor Trend we're talking about here.

Motor Trend is good for Randy's on-track expertise. Otherwise, Jalopnik has more credibility.
Is that for real? Wow. Zero credibility.

Is the Motor Trend Car Of The Year similar to Time's Person Of The Year? It's not necessarily the best car/person, just the most influential in the news and the cultural landscape. Kind of like how Hitler was Time's MOTY in 1938.

Then maybe I can see the Alpha getting the award. It's certainly made some news, both good and bad. It's a nice almost-comeback for Alpha and certainly brings another big contender to the table. If anything it's presence has been highly publicized and talked about.

In that case, I can see how the PT cruiser can be the COTY as well. It did help usher an era of new retro in American design that gave us the new Mustang, Camaro, Charger, and Challenger. It made new retro accessible to the masses being an economy car.

I'm in the minority I guess, but I absolutely love the look of the Quad. Minority again, but I'd take it over an M5. The back end is gorgeous, and it's got the exclusivity factor going for it where it's still an uncommon car.

Paddle shifters suck though, but what can you do.

I saw a red car merging in front of me at about 200 feet away looked interesting from the back and had to catch up to it to see what it was.. Giulia
then I passed it at high speed and saw again its front-side from my rearview.. god-aweful
imo
not the first time I've seen the Giulia but everytime I see the front-side, it adds to the wrinkles on my face

I may disagree with jmg on some things, but here he's spot on.

____ of the Year plaudits don't go to the best of whatever; they go to the most influential of whatever. That influence can be positive, negative, game-changing, etc. In that respect, the Giulia makes sense, Hitler makes sense, the PT Cruiser makes sense, Caitlyn Jenner makes sense ... and Trump made sense if he'd 'played ball', but instead we have 'The Silence Breakers' that have been arguably even more influential to more people this year.

(By the way, prediction for 2019: Tesla Model 3. Prediction for 2020: Corvette/Cadillac C8)

I see them on the regular around here & the rear looks like it was jacked right from a Lexus.

Car drives better than the F30/F80. If it worked, it would deserve the award. Sadly it doesn't appear to be able to.

Not a Lexus: an Infiniti Q60. Seriously: I have to do a double-take every time I see either on the road. The C pillar kink on the Q is usually my tip-off.

You know how many of these cars took a shit within 2k miles? A TON! Alphas have a bad history of reliability issues. Great car if it worked the entire time...but unless you want a loaner most of your lease or ownership...stay away.

I'm no fan of MT, however, multiple publications have reviewed this car and felt it was top of its class. Sounds like a lot of BMW and Audi drivers just making excuses.

Sat in the Giulia QV at the auto show and I must say the interior is one of the worst I've seen in that level of car. Looks like it belongs in a $15K Hyundai.

The reliability issues seem to be a commom motif with this car. For what it's worth I haven't seen any on the road. Would still like to drive it for my personal edification.

I hear you. I've seen a couple on the road. 4C as well. Not many though.

Alfa Romeo needs to work on technology and reliability. Reliability of Italians are poor similar to British's Jaguar and Land Rover. We buy car to enjoy it not keep coming back to dealership for issues, concerns, etc.

Plus, I've seen a few but not a super good looking. The rear reminds of new Toyota Camry

Alfa Rent / Lease

I could see it as a good car to rent for a short term or lease ---
but not for long term.
