Some HR departments are just as corrupt as the employees. My guess is that all along they kept ignoring the things he did, and this last person who came forward had evidence (such as a text message or picture) and planned on suing them or is in the process of suing them so they let him go. They only did so because money was involved.

The human resources department's function is to serve the needs of the business; its loyalty and responsibilities are to the company. Now, in some cases, that means advocate for employees against bad managers, because it's in the best interests of employers to retain great employees, identify and address bad management and stop legal problems before they explode. But plenty of other times, what's best for the employer will not be what's best for the employee, and the best interests of the employer will always win out. That's not cynicism; that's simply what HR's mission is.

On top of that, you shouldn't expect HR to keep anything confidential even if you ask or to divulge information they know about others and other departments. They can and will keep secrets or share information as they see fit. All of these things can work to your benefit or against it depending on your needs, the needs of the company, and the quality of your human resources department. Before you jump into a new job, or make a request of HR at your existing one, you should make an effort to understand how the department operates. You don't want to make a request and find out it hurts your position at the company.

This is absolutely correct. My advice is always framed in terms of the employer's best interests. Often, I come across circumstances where a department's best interests and the employer's best interests diverge. The capital "E" employer's interests always prevail.

What you touch on though is a bit understated. It is always in the employer's interest to end harassing behaviour of any type, not just sexual misconduct. Some of that is about values employees, some of that is about controlling legal exposure. The story always looks worse in the media when you knew about something and did nothing about it.

Except that there isn't necessarily a divergence between the two sets of interests. The employee and employer interests in workplace culture should be aligned. Safe and respectful workplaces should produce better results (quantity and quality).

Also, since my work involved being the management representative in dealing with unions and professional associations, I'll note that lots of employees have their own advocates as well. Obviously, lots of workplaces aren't organized, but the ones that are ... employees have more than one avenue in which to raise issues.

How's HR serving the company's interests if the company end up spending millions in litigations over something thst could ve easilt prevented? A smaller company may not recover...

One of my uncles was a Capt at United for as long i can remember growing up, he told me they had a function at work, he worked there for over 20 years, the chief pilot and HR lady didn't know who he was, that was his advice, you wanna keep it that way.
