I dabbled with some at home metal casting a few years back when I needed a custom mounting bracket for the clutch cable on the motorcycle I built. Nothing on the market came close to what I wanted so I had a buddy draw it up in Solidworks. We 3D printed the mold seed, then I cast it from brass in a clay mold like you would cast jewelry. Came out better than I hoped! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I have four escape windows from the basement in my home and yesterday I fabricated a cover for one of them. Today, I'll be making the other two (the first one I made many months ago but I did not like the design so I re-did it for these last three...)
I'll be finishing them with a rust-proof (lol) black paint...

Finally came up with a way to mount my MTB to my swing out. Have to mount it there to gain access to the cargo area since I’ve got a split hatch with a tail gate. Plus I’ve got a drawer system, and I don’t want to have to disassemble the bike mount each time I want in to get some gear.
Made some custom bolts and modified the swingout to accept a pintle mount. Counterbored some jam nuts in to fasten the carriage bolts on T slot. Used barrel nuts (with tamper proof bits) to align the flush mounts to the pintle mount and bored the receiver to accept a locking pin. A lot of moving pieces to get it all together for what it is, but I have it designed to just pull the lock pin and it comes right out. Real happy with how it turned out; we’ll just have to see if I get used to the added length. |

Cottage furniture
We bought a little 800sq ft cottage in the mountains recently and I found 4 planks of old pine in the crawlspace.
I made 3 tables so far, one is pictured, used to hold the amp for the stereo. I also made a table from a sample of the corrugated pipe we make at work for outside. |

Figured i'd use the flip up door area for something; universal cell holder. Door flips up and goes to home position proper. Made notch outs on top piece for button clearance.
*I know it may take away from the overall look of the door...but needed another cell holder solution.

While it wasn't the original intent, I feel this iteration should be considered a proof of concept at this point. In my mind, this was going to be a one-and-done project, but I've now realized that the original design just pushes the bike out too far and a change is needed. It's fine for me to bust the bike over to a local trail a few miles out, but I'll be taking it with me on long trips, too. Cringing at the thought of running into WalMart on a trip to find my shattered bike in the parking spot. If there was such thing as a pintle mount that had a mounting plate 90° from current, I'd be in the money. I had looked at the receiver mounted winch mounts which are exactly what I need, but they are clearly designed for smaller winches with their plate size and won't work for my design (that I've seen at least). I know exactly what I want and can design it ultra easy. I could make a cheap 90° adapter, but I don't want to introduce a new failure point with my beloved bike being the consequence. Problem is, my fabrication relationships are all hundreds of miles away and can already foresee this being a "pintle mount" that will cost 4x original. Regardless of cost, I'm too invested at this point and it will just have to be a custom design - which is fine AND fun, just sucks that I have everything I need, just angled wrong ![]() To make it worthwhile, I'll be adding some new fasten points to mount a couple recovery boards and/or Hi-Lift opposite the bike. Oh how things unravel... Tires are actually BFG KM3s in 315/75-16. They've been fantastic and do much better on the highway than I would have anticipated with their aggressive mud tread design. That said, for my use, I think a KO2 would be better suited. I guess I got caught up in the idea of some of my previous rigs that were much more dedicated (read trailered). More miles are paved than not for this rig - A/T would have been a better decision. |

My old man used to do that in his workshop. He said that if a plug wasn't 100% seated and a piece of metal went flying and slid down the wall, he wanted to be sure that it landed on the ground pin and then shorted hot/neutral to ground as it slid down further. If I recall correctly, he said that he picked up the idea from a hospital electrician many years ago.....
