I bought a new 1971 Mecury Capri 1600 right after they came out. The car was so popular at our local dealer that I had to put my name on a list and wait and see what arrived next. It was a take-it-or-leave-it situation. A blue one arrived and I took it.
Great little car, but a little anemic with the US mandated smog devices. When I had the engine rebuilt years later I added tubing headers, a Weber 2-barrel carburetor and the European Cortina camshaft. Big increase in performance. ![]()

Jeremy Clarkson already demonstrated this, by intentionally crashing a Volvo into a trash bin (dumpster for us dumb Americans) on Top Gear. He subsequently discovered that the auto-brake system didn't engage under a certain speed (15 MPH?), and obviously the car in this video wasn't moving very fast.....

Actually I think that car is only fitted with the Volvo Safety System, and not the pedestrian detection system.
That generation of V60 with pedestrian detection should have a square plastic sensor in the grille. So everything went according to spec ![]() ![]() The city safety system (that only works with other cars, by means of a laser sensor by the rear view mirror), only helps prevent colissions with a speed difference up to 15kph (~10mph).

I know what you mean. I took Drivers Ed in high school, it got you a discount on insurance and was a credit. I did my in car driving in a VW Rabbit because I wanted to drive Stick. It was a decent little car. I liked the Scirocco when it came out, seemed decent enough although I never owned one. I did have a V6 Passat with 6 speed for a while but it was plagued with electrical problems so I got rid of it.

Chap who bought my previous Merc C-class 200 sport had a Golf GTD,he spent a fortune on replacing wiring loom that went through the engine that got contaminated with oil stranding him. It required engine out and strip, so he got rid of it and would only buy a petrol car. |
