Schwinn and your parent's basement is my suggestion, and put either car payment into your retirement fund. In 40 years, both of those cars will be rusty hulks in a junkyard. Your retirement fund, OTOH, will have grown significantly after 40 years of compounding.....

320i in my own apartment.... i suspect the answer will differ based on the age of the person responding. Feel like younger people are much more ok with living with their parents later into adulthood.

OP is in California, and assuming they are in a major city, I would say 320i in your momma's house to save up for the insane real estate prices here. Coincidentally, I went from an Audi A4 in my momma's house, to a Audi S4 in my own townhouse, then downgraded to a 328i once I got my own house so I could afford the mortgage. Over time I got an F80 M3 CS while in my own house, so those nice cars will come over time but if they are preventing anyone from owning property, then it's time to re-prioritize.

Plus, there is nothing like opening YOUR garage to YOUR car, no matter what car it is. I loved having my own house and a 328i, because they were both mine.

This old fart assumed that "mamas crib" was missing "baby" at the beginning, and referred to living with his girlfriend and child.....

Lacking necessary info:

How old are you?
Are you in college or have you graduated?
Is your Mom elderly or in need of care?

Your own apartment for sure, but skip the 320 and get a reliable, low-maintenance Japanese car.

Your own as in you own the apartment or are you renting?

Well fundamentally renting is throwing money out the window... an F82 CS could be worth solid $ a few years down the road... but even buying an apt is a bad deal these days... it's not a single family home etc.

I think that's important, too.

In my case, I had more fun during my daily 30-mile dash to work in California in a Nissan Sentra than I did in an M6. The Sentra was much more nimble in the heavy traffic, and that made for a happier commute for me.

Today, I use the wife's Mazda 3 for driving in town and my M240i on back roads where I can access some of the car's power. We have a lot of hills and turns here, and at 2,950# fully-gassed, the MZ3 is way more fun in town.

And this is the mentality that has gotten so many people in trouble financially. And to take it one step further from MPhatic's post is to live with mom and drive a reliable, low maintenance car. Use the money you're saving from not having to pay rent or very little rent if your mom charges you to put into savings/retirement. All the stuff about nice cars and such will come in due time and sooner than you'd think. You'll be more happy when you have money that doesn't make you dependent on anyone. The goal is to have FU money. Once you have that level of independence, that's a much higher level of happiness that no nice car can match.

This thread is depressing.
Used to be, this was a simple keep renting vs. save to buy, because NOBODY seriously considered just living at home (or off your GF) as a real option. And the answer was: you can live in a car, but you can't race a house (another vote to bring back the M3 Touring?).

I don't know who you consider NOBODY. As mentioned above, there are cultures where it's normal to have adult kids stay at home until they can be self sufficient. And in those cultures, it's also normal for elderly parents to move in with their kids. As stated, the usual mindset is rent is paying for someone else's mortgage and wealth accumulation. Although in some situations, renting makes more sense than owning.

Getting back to your post, as long as you're not squandering the opportunity to save money to better yourself financially, there should be no stigma behind living with your parents. I did into my later 20's. I didn't piss the money away to buy a flashy car. I saved up and when I moved, it was into my first home. I've been doing fine ever since. With how crazy home prices have been, I really don't see how many younger adults can have a chance to buy a home without the help of staying with their parents.

Not everyone rolls this way, but the wife and I did and have been living happily ever after since mid-90s. I recommend it to anyone who has a reasonable shot at achieving it.

I graduated high school in San Francisco in 1966 and was out of the house soon after. Same for everyone I knew except for a close friend whose family was Macanese. He stayed in his family's home until he graduated college.

I rented a room for $35 ($320 today) in a nice little old lady's flat. I came and went as I pleased and rode motorcycles for transportation. Three years later I moved into a house I shared with a friend; that ran me all of $75 ($610 today). Rent was a small fraction of my income. The living certainly was easy back then.
