Team McLaren should definitely rewatch the 2017 Hungary F1 race and take notes.

Vettel (Ferrari) was leading the race. Räikkönen (Ferrari) P2. Bottas (Mercedes) P3. Hamilton (Mercedes) P4.

BOT tried to catch RAI. That didn't work. HAM communicated that he had more race pace than his team mate BOT. Team Mercedes decided to swap BOT and HAM to let HAM have a shot at catching RAI. That didn't work either: HAM trailed RAI but didn't manage to overtake the Ferrari. HAM proposed to give the P3 track position back to BOT. In the final corner of the final lap, HAM indeed moved over to let BOT pass. 0.423s difference at the chequered flag. Very fair and smart of both Hamilton and Mercedes to give it at least a try + no harm done.

McLaren should have done this today, also to make clear to Norris that they need to think long term - every WDC/WCC point counts: a point won is a point that competitors don't get. It could have earned them the race victory and maybe even a P1 and P2 (Piastri was clocking faster laptimes than Norris in the last ± 15 laps + in dirty air (tire degradation) + difficult-to-overtake circuit + Norris started sliding and even missed an apex during the final lap). Leclerc (P4) was too far behind to be any threat/risk, so McLaren could have given it a try. And if Verstappen and Piastri would have crashed (Verstappen would have been a very tough cookie to pass at this Honda home race), Norris would have left Japan with 25 points and both Verstappen and Piastri with 0 points.

Is this truly too complicated to understand for Zak Brown & C° ? Piastri knew this though.

Given the 'hard-to-overtake' layout of the circuit, the start grid position is key.

If Hamilton would have gotten pole position yesterday, he would have had the benefit of racing in 'clean air' and would have had a reasonable chance of a podium finish, maybe even a race win.
