(For the men) ... when you have multiple appointments at Urology. I think I may be facing a cystoscopy (a thin tube into the bladder to examine the interior.) Sounds like medieval torture to me.

For decades, men see the ladies face UTIs and the like and think "Thank goodness I'm a man and don't have to put up with that urology stuff" and then comes old age.

Last night I had been in bed about 20 minutes and was beginning to get sleepy when I heard the pizza guy cough downstairs. Then I remembered that I came up to get my wallet to pay the man.

I got a notice from my insurance company (USAA) that my ten-year level term policy, purchased in 2016, will see an increase in premiums from $200+ per month to $2,160+ per month effective March of 2026. Obviously I will not be renewing.

Then I hear about these companies that advertise "Don't let your policy lapse! Sell it to us and recoup some of the money you've shelled out for years." I went to a website for one of them and filled out some info. They inform me that my policy is worth thousands if I ditch it. I am totally stupid on this -- does anyone know how this makes sense?

Term life. If I keep it to the end (March of '26) I will have given them $24,760 in premiums. I'm OK with walking away with nothing, but these ads say I can get something out of the deal -- I've set up a phone call with Abacus Life for Friday morning.

Me thinks that the ads (or gig-based sales agents) are confused, but I'm not a life insurance expert.....

I’m not sure exactly how it works but am familiar with the ads. My guess is they pay you a little something and you assign ownership/control of the policy to them so they can make themselves the beneficiary. They make payments over the rest of your life and get paid down the road.

Or it could be a complete scam. Hard to tell.

Google AI's response to the life insurance question below. I was curious because I figured that a term policy would not qualify, but according to the AI bot it might.

Yes, you may be able to sell your term life insurance policy through a process called a life settlement.

Here's why and how it might work
Life Settlements: A life settlement involves selling your life insurance policy to a third-party company (a life settlement provider or investor) for a lump-sum payment.

The Buyer's Role: The buyer takes over paying the premiums and becomes the beneficiary of the policy, receiving the death benefit when you pass away.

Term Life Eligibility: While permanent life insurance (whole life, universal life) is more commonly sold in life settlements due to its cash value, you can sell a term life policy if it has a conversion option allowing you to switch it to permanent coverage.

Converting for Sale: If your term policy is convertible, you could convert it to a permanent policy first, which then becomes more attractive to buyers in the life settlement market.

Viatical Settlements: If you are terminally ill, you might qualify for a viatical settlement, where you sell your policy for a higher percentage of the death benefit because the payout is expected sooner due to your illness.

Reasons to Sell: People often sell their life insurance policies if they can no longer afford the premiums, no longer need the coverage, or need access to cash for various reasons (medical expenses, retirement, etc.).

How it Works: You can work with a life settlement broker or directly with a life settlement company to find buyers for your policy.
Important Considerations:
Loss of Death Benefit: Selling the policy means your beneficiaries will no longer receive the death benefit upon your death.
Tax Implications: The proceeds from a life settlement may be subject to taxes (income tax, capital gains tax), so it's important to consult with a financial advisor or tax consultant.

Eligibility: Life settlement companies usually have criteria, such as a minimum age (often 65) or a serious illness, to consider buying a policy.

Policy Value: The amount you receive from selling your policy will be less than the face value (death benefit) and typically more than the cash surrender value (if any).

Fees and Commissions: Be aware of any fees or commissions charged by brokers or settlement companies, as these can affect the net amount you receive.

Medicaid Eligibility: Selling your policy could affect your eligibility for Medicaid or other needs-based assistance programs.
Alternatives to Selling:
Convert to Permanent Coverage: If your term policy is convertible, you could convert it to a whole life or universal life policy to have lifelong coverage and build cash value.

Adjust Coverage: You might be able to reduce your coverage amount to lower the premiums and keep the policy in force.

Cancel or Let the Policy Lapse: You could also choose to cancel your policy, though you wouldn't receive any payment unless it had a cash surrender value (which term policies typically don't have).
It's recommended to consult with a financial advisor and potentially a life settlement broker or company to explore your options and determine if selling your term life insurance policy is the right decision for your individual circumstances.

You may want to talk with your broker about conversion options yourself before selling the policy, so that you have a say in when you die and not some investor.....

Just to close the loop, the company did not call me at the arranged time. I did a little more research and thinking and decided the hell with it. At my age my insurance premium goes up 1,300% (!) next Spring. I'm just going to let it lapse. I've got a mortgage-free house, three late-model loan-free vehicles and have arranged a survivor benefit for my wife if I go first. I'm standing pat.
