I suppose it was supposed to be the new generation of the 8 series, but since it was canceled they figured it was a shame to throw such a nice project in the trash. They showed a concept car and checked how many customers would be willing to buy a Skytop. Ultimately, it will come out of the factory in a quantity of only 50 units.

Personally I would love for a next generation 8/6 with a targa roof. That would do really well.

That front grille/kidney setup looks real close to the new M2’s. That must be the final answer with BMW’s next design language. It’s on 2 different protos now.

Folks, it’s a halo car, and they’re all spoken for. You can stop worrying about the $!

Last I checked, all 50 units of the 3.0 CSL were sold or spoken for? I don’t think BMW will have an issue selling all 50 units of the Skytop.

Sure, I would imagine there are easily 50 people in the world that would buy the car. Just seems like if they are going to come up with a nice design they can make it so they can actually sell it to lots of people although the M8 was already having problems being overpriced and not selling

What’s with the comments, even if it was 1,5m all 50 would be sold out. It’s not meant for a “regular” BMW buyer. When I think about it it’s not even meant for a regular BMW M buyer.
It’s meant for ultra wealthy, hence the limited number, the price tag is more or less irrelevant. Wealthy people want bespoke and don’t care whether it is 500k, 1,5m or 5m, the point is to have the only one at an event.

Indeed, every BMW Skytop has been sold to eagerly awaiting buyers.

BMW Skytop is built on an 8-series platform using standard production components. Even the engine the same: 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 from M8 Competition.

The interior is also practically the same, but with hand stitched leather and additional details.

Bowers & Wilkins audio is standard - not a surprise at this price point.

The best way to drive one? Pay an even higher price on the secondary market.

The second best way to drive? Lease M8 Competition.

They will definitely reconsider if the tariffs will be imposed. There is no BMW that should cost that much.

I agree though something off, bloated, unrefined and way too much screen area, digitization and plastic.

New X3 and M5 come to mind, really loved 2023 X3 look very cool and smooth, tight sporty lines. New M3/M4 has grown on me quite a bit.

Ever notice how the X5 exhaust just has a raw unfinished pipe sticking out the back? Very weird F15s weren’t like this, it’s the G05s. Very weird not to finish the design!

Example pic of detached unfinished exhaust… very weird. F15s were floating also but completely finished through the tip.

Totally agree on the X5 exhaust. I have an X5 M60 and maybe the average person doesn't super notice it but it could have been designed so much better as opposed to just a hole with a pipe sticking out of it like you said.

It’s just a marketing deal. Y’all take some of this too seriously. A car like this is just built to create buzz, PR, and hopefully test the market and/or some ideas for full production models to come.

Whatever market they were targeting, they did an amazing job.
It's sold out.

They didn't do well on pricing though. They've underpriced it. (The price needed to be higher to balance supply and demand)

Also, no manual no care. Putting in a manual gearbox is what would actually make it unique to become even more of a collector car.
In a sea of DCT’s and auto’s, it would have been the factor that made it stand out.
Needs a manual gearbox and analog gauges! I would’ve preferred that BMW revived the Z8 with a few modern twists and called it a day.
