I had no idea Porsche would CPO a 12 year old car.

I bought my 21 Cayenne new but have bought 3 CPO BMWs and had good experiences with all 3, though BMW has now reduced its CPO warranty to 1 year so the typical CPO that is a 3 year old off lease car will have just 1 year of original plus 1 year of CPO. The Porsche CPO is more appealing.

So I guess you weren't able to climb up their priority list and get offered a Spyder RS?

In general i find a lot of folk like to be over-insured. I find warranties in general are laced with so many conditions that you need to basically lose a gearbox or engine to come out in front. Keep the money in your pocket and budget for repairs/maintenance.

Yeah, I'll never buy an extended warranty for any car. When I got my Cayman, I knew very little about CPO coverage. I assumed it would cover many things including obvious things needing replacement that may had been missed by CPO. I was way wrong.

Fast forward 2.5 years and lots of working on the car myself and learning a lot more about the brand and these cars, CPO is meaningless to me and a Porsche with CPO would not sway me more to buy the car. I love that the flat 6 naturally aspirated cars are so easy to work on. Most everything is accessible. I can have the 6MT out in about 3 hours and the entire motor and trans out in less than 5 hours. Quicker if I did it often.

Nice purchase! I've been eyeing a 718 for my next purchase, but as you said, Porsche option prices are ridiculous. I'd have to find a low-mileage pre-owned in as close a spec to what I want as possible.

+1 And not only a car, but anything used, including a used house.

IMHO those multi-point inspections are mostly "scam" too. There is no way mechanics would be able to really check a car they see for the first time and don't know its history. Unless there is something really obvious like a leaking strut or torn bushing.

Same for house inspections.

Gorgeous color! QQ - do you have PPF on that lower sides / rear impact area? Considering it as I have the front impact areas covered. How does the paint hold up if not?

Congrats! And welcome to the club! As has already been said, the NA engines are sublime once they reach their happy point at 4k+.

I got a CPO 2014 C4S last year. I don't feel I paid much a mark up (although I'm sure it was there) but have taken the car in a few times.

Annoyingly, the dealer I went to didn't cover the sunroof gasket that came loose since the car came to me, from a certified Porsche dealer, w/ a CF-look vinyl wrap on the sunroof and roof panels. It was loose the first time I opened the sunroof, too. :| Wear/tear items are also not covered so I had to get a new battery as well.

They did cover several other things, though. At a burdened $309/hr labor rate, I think I was able to recoup some of the baked in cost of the CPO. I suspect some of it was work caused at the fault of one of the technicians but can't prove it. (Note: This is reminding me to total up the labor hours for all the repairs/work that I've had done to monetize the value provided by my CPO. )

Like a lot of things, whether or not a CPO is worthwhile is up to the wrenching skill, bank account, and risk assessment of the owner. I very rarely will entertain the idea of an extended warranty but one happened to come on a car spec'd to my interest and w/ reasonable mileage + history l, much less at a reasonable price based on the market at the time. I'd prefer to wrench on my own but found nothing wrong w/ having a safety net for something outside my skillset.

$309/hr labor rate? Good God!!!

I bill out at $320/hr as an environmental consultant with 25 years under my belt and I'm shocked clients pay me at that rate. $309/hr for a Porsche tech is ludicrous. These cars are easy to work on. They come apart and go back together easily and with precision. Short of engine block work or transmission disassembly, which NO Porsche tech is doing at a dealership, these cars are just as easy to work on as most any other late model car and in many cases, easier. Plus, the fasteners they use tend not to rust.

I guess people enjoy paying crazy rates to sit in the dealership and drink and eat "free" coffee, drinks, and snacks

Yes, the car came with PPF on it. Seems to have it on the front end, lower sides, and the impact area before the rear wheels. There are some paint chips on the hood and front end. But the car is 6 years old, so I knew it wasn't going to be perfect. Not sure if the paint chips happened before the PPF went on or if the damage occurred in spite of the PPF. At this moment the PPF covers the chips in the front. The back of the car is fine.

I previously had a 911. On that car I paid to have the entire car covered in PPF. For something that valuable, I think it's a no-brainer.

About the same in Kansas City. All the Porsche independent shops here (3 of them) are great to work with and are busy, largely because our Porsche dealer charges $280/hr and can't get you in for weeks.

Yeah long waits here, the issue is actually labour. I know a few guys wanting to start high end indy garages and they cannot find a tech for a price where they can charge much less than a dealer.

$140/hour? Jesus you must live in the middle of nowhere or a very low cost of living area. That's an indy labor rate from 10-15 years ago...

Nope, suburban Toronto, only about 6.5M people here in the area. And yeah CAD$ but that is irrelevant. HEre's two of them........

https://europeanautomotive.ca/
Exotics (Lambo/McLaren/Ferrari) are $210

https://mantisautosport.com/

I use Mantis and a guy that used to be a senior tech at the local Porsche dealer who works out of his own garage. He is $100 an hr and TBh is a freaking genius with the 997 series cars, knows them backwards but no overheads so that rate is obviously skewed.

European Auto recently moved to their new location for extra space, my 997 was by far and away the most humble vehicle there.

It seems I can get in within a week unless I request a loaner. Then it is 2+ weeks.
I stilp jeed to find an indy ahop 'cause that $309/hr is no bueno. I don't care how fancy the building is and I don't care for treats or drink coffee or soda. I will say, though, that the new 360° auto-imaging system they are putting in for the service intake bay is pretty cool. That gives them a full visual of the car as it comes in. Necessary? Probably not, but cool.

Bingo! Now I know why I always get my cars back partially fixed or sometimes even with broke parts - they just don't like me!

And my wife has always been pushing me to drop cars for a service arguing that she doesn't understand car internals. Need to convince her do it herself next time and see if service would improve.
